Spring  2016                                “Supporting the Emergence of the Integrative Health Model”                            A-2

– Reflections Commentary on our times  . . . by Brian D. Jones, M.Ed., Naturopath

Our second seasonal newsletter builds on the fall newsletter by further emphasizing the mission of these writings . . . that is, material involves personal health education and a move toward assisting in the creation of greater kindness, empathy, compassion and greater health – both body and mind. In the “Did You Know ? “  section below, you will find an article by Ellen Cook dealing with the wounds that we all have and how we may further decrease the pain from such wounds – whether newly acquired or those that may be within for which we are unaware.   I know you will find it timely, if not for yourself, perhaps for another who is in pain. In our daily activities we can view many opportunities for sympathy, empathy and compassion for another. These progressive levels of feelings for another have us feel another’s pain and discomfort and further develop our spiritual being within. Firstly, through the sympathy we show – an understanding from afar -  a viewing of another’s pain – it can be a passing event. Secondly, we can show empathy – a deeper feeling that may have us stop what we are doing and feel deeper and show further emotional involvement in another’s pain, and finally, we can go deeper still,  to a level of compassion – a level of feeling for another where we decide to get more personally involved in the experience, perhaps to the level of assisting or offering to assist another. Others much more enlightened than I have stated that our world can become a better place by increasing this compassion and it appears it is fairly easy to develop – through simple practice . . . when the opportunity crosses our path, we can stop for a moment and simply, truly attempt to FEEL what the other is experiencing. It appears when we do that, we are on  our way to becoming a more compassionate being – one who invites another  to share their pain, their efforts, and their triumphs and join the Family of Man as a participant and not simply an observer.

Did You Know?     By Ellen Cook, M.A

What about the wounds, emotional and physical, that we experienced as a child?  How can they impact our adult life?  In the ongoing balancing and healing efforts of both our body and our emotional mind, each individual is different.  For some, the impact of negative childhood experiences can affect the very fabric of their daily activities.  For others, these negative experiences do not seem to affect their daily lives at all, in fact, some who experience negative physical or emotional events seem to have, somehow , become stronger. How is this possible?  All of us have different ways of interpreting these negative events – different methods of coping.  If, for some, intervention is early enough, the individual can learn positive outcomes and go on to establish healthy relationships, experiences and make healthy choices.  For others, if the negative experience is not acknowledged and positively acted on with the victim, healing and recovery potentials remain in the subconscious where the brain attempts to sort out and protect, often, along with the victim playing a role with a variety of negative coping skills designed to have them feel better for the moment.  These coping skills can be seen as a band-aid and they are unable to effect true healing and recovery – remaining the source of ongoing negative behaviors that can further direct downward ones true feeling about themselves.  These coping mechanisms can be pills, alcohol, risky behaviors, eating or the many others our collective families seem to experience and attempt to correct.  True intervention and long-term behavior changes center on first, an awareness, then education, practicing and reinforcing positive behaviors, exercise, meditation and they MUST have the human connections that re-integrates the soul impact into the individual – perhaps a part of the soul that never was, or, was taken at the time of the trauma, whether witnessed or personally experienced. What is that motivating factor, that “ahha” moment where one turns and decides to alter a negative path?  Often, for the individual, it is someone who they care so deeply about that it can affect this direction positively, or, continued on next page.....

A quiz about the body If the body was a car, how might we go about fixing the “low oil” warning light?  A.  Add just enough oil for the light to turn off, then drive until the warning light comes on again, only to do the same procedure – are we addressing the cause or symptom? OR, B.  Go to the car fuse box, and pull the fuse so the warning light can’t turn on – is this masking the condition? OR C. Go to a mechanic to cut the wire that connects the light to the dashboard? , OR D. check the oil dip stick , add the proper amount of oil, and then schedule an appointment to have the care serviced as soon as possible? How often do we practice dealing with symptoms only to have them really get our attention later, and again and again.  Consider scheduling a meeting with a conventional or holistic health practitioner who will address both symptoms and dig deeper to the causes as well as speak with you at length.

Patient / Client Spotlight Good Stories from Healthy People and How They Got That Way - My journey to wellness began over 5 years ago.  That may sound like a long time to still be working on the journey but I have learned that a lifetime of abusing your system takes a constant effort to repair.  I first came here to address physical pain throughout my body and soon learned that the physical body is also connected to the emotional body, you cannot address one without the other. I have been overweight my whole life but have been working on that for the past year and getting better but that too was a result of the emotional and causing the physical.  I was taking medications for depression, anxiety, blood pressure, and pain.  It was a viscous circle.  I also worked for many years with harmful chemicals and smoked for a long time in my younger years.  So, as I said earlier, I am still on the journey but I am no longer taking any prescription medications, I have dealt with releasing emotional issues through Emotional Release Techniques used by Dr. DeSandre as well as having spinal adjustments as needed.  I have lost 50 lbs. so far and still at it, I have begun a program of cleansing and detoxing my body – with Brian Jones, our Naturopath.  The detox and cleanse is designed to clean out heavy metals and chemicals.  I have regular massages with our Massage Therapist, Maureen Holdaway to keep stress levels at a minimum and I feel like I am starting down a new and exciting path to the future.  DeSandre Wellness Center is not just a Chiropractic Center . It works for me!

Heal Within, Heal Without -The Healing Power of Emotional Balance - by Janis Kling, D.C.  – Each of us has a natural Healer within us and our bodies are constantly in a state of healing.  We take in food, water, and the essential nutrients our cells need to re-generate, replicate and heal.  Without us giving it any thought, healing occurs every minute of every day.  EXCEPT WHEN IT DOESN’T. What causes our body to stop what it does naturally? Why does disease become chronic or an injury or pain become debilitating?  How has our connection to healing, become disconnected? What part do emotions play in healing?  We are complex beings inhabiting a physical body that magically monitors everything we experience.  Every thought, emotion, and life experience is held in our cellular memory.  Physically, our response to an emotional stress becomes habitual.  We experience emotional stress and our body is “trained” where to hold that particular emotion.  It gives us clues to the emotion that is causing the pain. For example, neck and shoulder pain is often bearing burdens of others, mid-back can be to want someone to “get off my back”, or low back pain may be feeling lack of support.  In my practice, I often find an injury will not heal until the patient  can connect the injury and the underlying emotional stress. Pain and disease challenge us to evaluate how we are living our lives.  Are we holding on to fear or anger?  Do we need to forgive - ourselves first and then others? Are we feeling we are a victim? Are we willing to accept the challenge our body offers us to look within ourselves and accept and release the unprocessed emotions that we carry. It is where true healing lies.  If you have a health challenge – contact me at the Holistic Health Center drjanis@drkling.com  I look forward to meeting with you.
